Love is... A Sack of Rocks

This is what my husband brought home for me yesterday – a sack of rocks!  Not wine and flowers as expressions of his love – no special occasion anyway.  He was out shooting a small video job in Boulder and stopped at the side of the road on the way home to collect rocks, so that I could do more stone balancing J   Now that’s love for you!  Someone who knows what you really need J lol   I was so tickled, I just laughed and laughed…  A man who knows my Heart…  I love that he is this way – romantically practical, and yet sensitive and aware – which does not mean that our relationship has been easy – quite the contrary - but he has always facilitated my “inner process.”  That is the most meaningful gift indeed…

I created a circle around the pedestal balance in the back yard with some of the rocks he brought me.
It creates a mandala-looking affect – a stone mandala!  I need to add more to fill it in.

And I also created these two small stone balances in the circle as well.
I love this one – a little Hobbit balance. J

 The back side

And a double stack…
(the bottom rock says Remember)

So therapeutic working with stones, with earth, with balance…

Am also working on the next painted mandala…
I’m trying different techniques.
It may be ready by Spring! lol
Stay tuned!

  1. I have a thing for rocks, too! I haven't done much stacking and balancing, but you are inspiring me to give it a try.

  2. Oh this is so lovely, all of it! Your man knowing you so well and wanting to add a little bit! My one has been bringing back sawn down bits of a tree on his walks of an evening with the dog. He knows I like the shapes we have yet to decide what to make - a birdhouse I think! Will post. Happy weekend. x

  3. that is such a sweet gift. many years ago, Richard (my boyfriend) and I went to PEI. The rocks there have red in them. The soil itself is read. For my souvenir I loaded a bunch of rocks into the car. Richard unloaded them. WHat!! These are my special souvenirs. HEHE. Guess after that he understood i loved rocks.

    1. Ins't that sweet!? :) Glad you got a trunk load :) I have always "collected" little stones on my walks - which I haven't been doing in a long time - walking that is... But now we need to go on rock expeditions in the car - lol :)

Congratulations on the publication of your book of poems, Suki! Am so happy for you!

  4. This is fantastic, what a thoughtful gift! I would have laughed too! Of all the things I've been selling and giving away this winter I haven't touched my bowls of rocks yet. I doubt I'll haul of them across the country but...you never know. Maybe I could practice balancing the tiny ones on the dining room table since we are still covered with snow here.

    1. I know I thought of that too because we have some really nice River Rocks but they are really *heavy.* And I did think, what are we going to do with all these rocks when we eventually move! :) They'll just have to go back to a river or a side of a road or base of a mountain somewhere :O) Yes, the small rocks make good inside balances, but if they're in a traffic area they will tumble when you walk across the floor :) Oh wish we had your snow! We are so dry, as you can tell by the photos. Love my big bare dirt spot in the lawn? :) What better use than rock balancing!

  6. Its been so long since I blogged (reading my favorite writers and writing) its so nice to come upon your latest post! It is so soothing to look at, the manadala that you;ve created. A long time ago I was in a workshop where the presenter narrated of a healing technique (cant remember what it called now!)where she would draw circles in the sand and gradually assist here clients into the inner recesses of the circles which she said was like lead into a metaphorical healing.... We were encouraged to try it out and I loved the peaceful and calming effect walking into these circles had on me.

I also love how you talk about romatically practical love you and your spouse share! I think of what we share (my hubby and I ) as that too!

Hope you are doing well christine :-)

    1. Good to see you Aarathi! Well my stone mandala needs some work :) The circle needs to be filled in with more stones/rocks... I think what you are referring to is a labyrinth... I am also drawing and painting mandalas on paper :) That has been very soothing too. Will be posting my next one this week on the Spring Equinox... Thanks for coming by. I see that your life is pretty chaotic lately...

  7. Yes! Labyrinth it is! haha. I have a wonderful drawing and coloring book by Susan FIncher called coloring mandalas. It used to be such a wonderful process coloring in them (they are a lot like Indian Rangoli's too!)

I look forward to your paintings :-)

    1. Thanks Aarathi. Yes I saw Susan Fincher's coloring book. I am learning to design my own with compass and angles, and then of course color/paint them in - which is all so therapeutic... There is another woman whom I think you might like - Judith Cornell. She has a book on Mandalas as well. I haven't seen it yet, as I'm waiting for the book to arrive in the mail today :) I will post a link when I post my mandala on Weds.

  8. I live on the beach and end up with lots of stones. I think I will try making a little balance of my own. I like your little hobbit one.

    1. Thanks Kara! :) And welcome. Yes, stone balancing is fun. Check out Michael Grab's website http://www.gravityglue.com/ to see some wonderful balances. He actually has a you tube video that is very inspiring - which I don't have access to at the moment. It is in my post "Focus As A Gateway."

I see from your Google+ page that you are from Mass? Me too! Living in Colorado now for many, many years...
