Wise Cows...

“Animals do not spend years inventing and constructing burdens
 for themselves.
You do not walk into a field and encounter a cow who is seriously self-analyzing
and in deep turmoil because she is failing to connect with her ’inner Cow.’

It is highly improbable that you will ever meet a cow who is seriously
swamped by the fact that her project of self-improvement [enlightenment]
has unleashed this huge ancestral cow thing in her life,
and now she can hardly walk because she knows she is

carrying all the cow karma of her ancestry.

As far as we know cows are not burdened in this manner
by ultimate questions…”

John O’Donohoe

Maybe we should sit satsang
with the Cows!

We found this sign on a cattle gate while out riding several years
ago and couldn’t help but laugh.
  Smart Cows!
The owner just leaves them a sign to remember to close the gate!

Kind of reminds me when I was a kid and didn’t close the door.
My father would yell after me – “what’a ya live in a barn?”

  2. someone once asked our Zen teacher about small children and how focused and present they are. She referred to it as "single enlightenment". They are in this state but unaware of it. I suppose cows would qualify for single enlightenment!

But yes to emulate the simplicity, the uncomplicated approach to life of the wise cows and other beings who " just are".

    love the sign!

    1. Love your teacher's description of small children as being enlightened but unaware of it. I think that kind of fits the rest of us too! :) We're enlightened, we just don't know that we are...

When I read this quote in John O'Donohoe's book I just had to laugh, and post it :) I thought the way he delivered the message was such a hoot - that we burden ourselves unnecessarily trying to figure things out, to "get it"...

      MU :)

    1. Hi Diane :) I read this quote from John O'Donohoe's book one morning and had to laugh. Tis' so true! We unnecessarily burden ourselves with our mental constructs so much of the time. Of course, who knows what cows think, but I thought it as a humorous way to make the point of the simplicity of just being, for those times when we start floundering in those mind troughs :)
